“Sustainable development requires human ingenuity. People are the most important resource.”-
Dan Shechtman

Jan Daksha Trust was established in 2007 to empower the migrant labour force from marginalised communities living in Udaipur city. Jan Daksha provides necessary support to these labourers, with a special focus on the needs of the female migrant workers.

Over the past 14 years, Jan Daksha has emerged as a vibrant institution capable of imparting the necessary support to migrant workers with the assistance of the Labour Help and Resource Centre (Shramik Sahayata Evam Sandarbh Kendra). There are umpteen number of success stories in which the labour force has been able to realise employment opportunities and drastically improve their quality of life through the help of Jan Daksha.

The institute has been operational since 2007 and so far has been able to achieve tremendous results which would not have been possible without the support of the Jan Daksha team, donors, volunteers, interns and assistance of several others who came forward to help selflessly.

I would like to express gratitude to our donors and volunteers for believing in the vision of Jan Daksha Trust and providing the necessary assistance in all development platforms.

I acknowledge the immense contribution of all the team members, who for the past 14 years have been able to achieve the target set for them by ensuring the highest quality of work. I encourage them to scale up their efforts in the forthcoming years.

Jandaksha journey (2007-2022)

Jan Daksha Trust believes that labourers from the Dalit, tribal, and marginalised communities who have been traditionally poor, deprived, and exploited have the inherent ability to fight for and acquire their rights. These workers possess all those skills that are essential to help themselves lead better lives. What they simply need is a hand of support that can nurture their talents and abilities and guide them towards their aspirations.

Jan Daksha Trust is the result of relentless ideation and thinking on this premise. The Trust was started by a group of active thinkers with the goal of engaging with the poor, vulnerable, exploited, and unorganised sections of society. Jan Daksha was registered under Section 42 of the Rajasthan Trust and Society Registration Act, 1959, in 2007.

Jan Daksha runs the Labour Help and Resource Centre (Shramik Sahayata Evam Sandarbh Kendra) in Udaipur city through which many resources and services are provided to the migrant workers, especially women. The center frequently registers labourers, issues identity cards, helps with the formation of collectives, trains workers in skill development, locates employment opportunities, settles legal disputes, identifies those workers eligible for government welfare schemes, counsells women migrant labourers, and directs workers to better healthcare facilities. Through these activities, Jan Daksha Trust has created a strong bond with the migrant labourer community, drastically improving their quality of life.

OUR VISION

An empowered society where no person is vulnerable; where rich and poor, men and women, children and adults lead a peaceful and respectable life; and where every person thinks and participates in the process of development.

OUR MISSION

The creation of the ideal society where every unit thinks independently about its self-development, comes forward openly, and contributes actively to determine its role in the society.

OUR OBJECTIVES

- Economic, social, and political resurrection of the poor and backward sections of society
-Enhancing the livelihoods of poor communities in both rural and urban areas and organising training programmes to facilitate such enhancement
-Mobilising women into collectives to lead them towards empowerment; developing leadership through guidance and counselling sessions
-Training programmes for unskilled youth in both rural and urban areas in order to prepare them for placement opportunities
-Working on issues related to health in both rural and urban areas; promoting natural curative practices for resolving such issues

Area of Operation: Udaipur City & Mavli

Udaipur, located in southernRajasthan, is surrounded by the Aravalli Hills on all sides and is well-known for its scenic beauty. There are 11 tehsils in Udaipur, out of which six have been demarcated as Tribal Area Development Agency (TADA) areas and five as those under the Modified Area Development Agency (MADA).

Most of the villages in these tehsils are characterised by close proximity to hilly terrains and forest lands. Hence, the total land area available and suitable for the cultivation of crops is very low. Proper irrigation is absent in these areas, so agriculture is predominantly rain-fed; the incidence of rainfall has been very meagre in the past few years. Thus, it has become impossible to be dependent on agriculture alone for the entire year. This is one of the foremost causes of migration towards nearby urban centres in search of better livelihoods.
