Jandaksha engages in the process of collectivisation with the objective of organising the workers from the unorganised sector. Such trade-based collectives act as a medium for the workers from the same trade to come together to discuss their problems and look for solutions. This is a unique forum for the workers in the unorgaised sector where they can find common ground on issues like wage rates, payment, skills, markets, negotiation skills and social security and look for ways of solving them.
The migrant labourers who come to Udaipur are predominantly engaged in occupations like construction, head loading, plumbing, electrician, painting and other low-end jobs. Since they are unorganised labourers, they do not get their due wages. They are forced to do extra work but still are not paid their wages on time or are not paid full due wages. They are also mentally exploited. They are not even in a position to wait at the chowktis in a respectable manner. In such a scenario, establishing trade-based workers collectives is a good alternative. In this way, workers from relevant trades organise themselves into a collective so that they also familiarise themselves with the new market developments and techniques in their trade.
